The answer changes with the sample size
Mahjong is a skill game delivered through a randomiser. Chance controls which tiles reach your rack and in what order, but every point that actually moves across the table is the product of a choice somebody made.
Over a single hand, randomness can flatten the strongest player at the table. Over a month of weekly sessions, it almost never does. The useful question is not whether luck matters, but how quickly its influence fades.
The three moments chance enters a hand
Randomness is not smeared evenly through a game of mahjong. It arrives at three identifiable points, and after each one the game hands control straight back to you.
- The deal. The tiles you start the hand with arrive at random. Nothing you do influences what they are.
- The order of the wall. The moment the wall is stacked, the entire future draw sequence is already fixed. Whether the bamboo you need sits two tiles away or ninety was settled before anyone touched it.
- What the other three players do. Their calls and discards are not random, but from your seat they behave like weather. You cannot control them, only read them and respond.
Notice what is missing from that list. Nothing about how you shape your hand, price it, or release tiles from it.
Chance fixes the inputs. It never touches the output.
How fast does luck wash out?
No study has measured the exact hand count at which skill overtakes luck in mahjong, and any article quoting you a precise crossover number has invented it. What follows is an ordering built from how the game is structured, not a measurement.

The bottom row is the only one anybody keeps records of. Competitive circuits publish ranking lists compiled from results across many sanctioned tournaments, and a rating assembled that way is the closest thing the game has to a public record of who is consistent rather than who ran hot for a weekend.

Four decisions luck cannot make for you
1. The wait you end up holding
Your wait is the set of tiles that completes your hand. Because every tile in the set exists in a known, fixed number of copies, the tiles that can complete your hand are countable rather than a matter of hope.

Landing on a shape with eight live tiles instead of three is not a lucky break. It is arithmetic done three turns earlier, which is exactly what tile efficiency practice trains.
2. When you stop competing for the hand
Every hand reaches a point where continuing costs more than quitting. Folding early and cleanly converts a disaster into a rounding error, and nothing in the wall stops you doing it.
Beginners fold too late, usually because they have already invested in the hand. That is the single most expensive habit in the game and it has nothing to do with the tiles.
3. What the hand is worth before you chase it
A cheap hand completed on turn nine is often worth more than an expensive hand abandoned on turn sixteen. Pricing the hand before committing is a judgement call, not a draw.
4. How much you tell the table
Your discards are a public broadcast. Ordering them so the suit you are collecting stays ambiguous costs nothing and buys you turns of freedom, especially against opponents who track discards closely.
Worked example: one discard, twice the odds
Say you have just drawn, and you now hold 2-3-4 bamboo, 5-6-7 bamboo, 3-4-5 dots, 5-7-8 dots and a pair of East winds. That is one tile more than you can keep, so you owe the table a discard. Three runs are already complete and East is your pair, so the whole hand comes down to what you keep from 5-7-8 dots.
- Discard the 5 dot. You keep 7-8 dots and win on 6 or 9 dots, which is up to eight live tiles.
- Discard the 8 dot. You keep 5-7 dots and win on the 6 dot alone, which is at most four.
Both discards leave you one tile from a completed hand, and in the moment both feel identical. One of them is roughly twice as likely to arrive. Repeat that decision across a hundred hands and two players who were dealt exactly the same tiles finish the season in different places.
Am I unlucky, or was I wrong? A five-question audit
After a bad session, run the hand you are still annoyed about through this list before blaming the wall.
- Did I choose the wider wait when I had the option, or the prettier one?
- At the moment I dealt in, could I name a safer tile in my hand? If yes, that was a decision, not a draw.
- Was I still pushing at turn fifteen with a hand worth almost nothing?
- Did I call a set that locked my hand into a shape I could not defend?
- Did I know what the other three players were collecting, or was I only looking at my own rack?
Anyone who answers honestly usually finds two or three decisions that had nothing to do with fortune. That is the material improvement is made from, and it overlaps heavily with the errors most new players repeat.
Three ways players mislabel their own results
Counting wins and ignoring the size of losses
Two players can win the same number of hands and finish an evening hundreds of points apart, because one of them paid out three times for expensive hands. Win rate is the flashy number; average loss is the one that decides the ladder.
Remembering the tile that came, not the tile you passed up
Memory strongly favours dramatic draws. The quiet discard you made four turns earlier, which halved your chances, leaves no impression at all.
Judging a season by a night
One session is far too small a sample to say anything about anybody, including yourself. Keep a running tally across a term of play and the picture stops being a mystery.
Turning this into actual practice
Skill in mahjong compounds through repetition, which means the constraint for most people is not talent but table time. A standing fortnightly game with the same group does more for your play than any amount of reading.

The questions this argument always raises
Is mahjong more luck or more skill?
Both, on different timescales. A single hand is dominated by the deal and the wall order, while results across many sessions are dominated by decision quality, particularly defence.
Can a complete beginner beat an experienced player?
Yes, and it happens often. That is a feature of the game rather than a flaw in it, and it is why mahjong works so well as a mixed-ability social game.
How long before skill starts showing in my results?
There is no fixed number of hands, and anyone quoting one precisely is guessing. In practice, players who track their scores across a month or two of regular sessions can usually see the trend clearly.
Which skill improves my results fastest?
Folding. Learning to abandon hands that are no longer worth defending cuts your biggest losses immediately, and it requires no memorisation of scoring tables.
Does the variant change the luck-to-skill balance?
Somewhat, though less than the sample-size effect does. Hand requirements and scoring vary widely between rulesets, and a ruleset that sets a minimum hand value rewards players who can price a hand accurately before committing to it. How many hands you play still matters more than which variant you play them in.
