- Risk Management: Managing risk becomes more crucial at an advanced level. Skilled players assess the potential rewards of making aggressive moves like declaring Riichi or pursuing rare high-scoring hands versus the risks of not completing their hand and losing points.
- Aiming for High-Value Hands: Advanced players often target more complex and higher-scoring hands, even if they are riskier. These hands can lead to significant point gains when won.
- Baiting Opponents: Players with a deep understanding of the game may set traps by discarding tiles that seem safe but could complete their opponents’ hands. This tactic involves predicting how opponents will react to your discards.
- Adapting to the Table: The advanced player should be flexible and adapt to the table dynamics. If a player is far ahead in points, the strategy might shift to defensive play to prevent others from catching up.
- Defensive Strategies: Understanding the flow of the game and recognizing when to play defensively is crucial. This might involve avoiding high-risk moves and aiming for a modest but more reliable win.
- Time Management: Advanced players often have a good sense of when to push for a quick win and when to slow the game down to their advantage. They may strategically choose to play conservatively when they are leading.
- Mind Games: Beyond just tile reading, experienced players may engage in subtle psychological warfare, trying to influence their opponents’ decisions or provoke them into making mistakes.
- Study of Yaku and Hands: Learning the various yaku (scoring elements) and winning combinations is essential. Advanced players have a comprehensive knowledge of the different hands they can aim for and how to assemble them.
