How to Teach Mahjong to Someone in One Game

Mahjong can seem intimidating, but with the right approach, you can teach someone the basics in one single game. The key is simplifying early and letting experience do the teaching.

I find that practise makes perfect – better so then explaining and demonstration. I compare mahjong to the card game ‘Big 2’ or Australian’s ‘Fourteen’.

Step 1: Explain the Goal (2 Minutes)

“Make four sets and one pair before everyone else.”

Note: Avoid scoring at first.

Step 2: Introduce Tiles by Function

Suits = numbers
Honors = special tiles
Ignore flowers and bonus tiles initially

Step 3: Start Playing Immediately

Let the learner:

Draw
Discard
Ask questions freely

Correct gently as the game progresses.

Step 4: Add Rules Gradually

Only introduce:

Chow
Pung
Winning condition

Save advanced rules for later games.

Step 5: Celebrate the First Win

Winning once builds confidence—and hooks new players.

Once the new player is learning, and enjoying the game, you can introduce more about the ‘wind’ positions, and points. Let’s play mahjong 🀄!
