Knowing when to push for a win; and when to play safe, is one of the hardest skills in Mahjong. Strong players don’t always chase big hands; they know when survival matters more than points.
When to Take Risks
Consider playing aggressively if:
- Your hand is already well-formed
- You’re one tile away from winning
- The point value justifies the danger
- Opponents appear far from completion
When to Play Safe
Switch to defense if:
- Multiple opponents are calling tiles
- Late-game discards feel risky
- You’re far from a winning hand
- You’re leading in points overall
Balancing the Two
Good Mahjong isn’t all offense or defense – it’s knowing when to switch. A safe discard may cost you a win, but a reckless discard can cost you the entire round.
Winning Mahjong over the long term is about minimizing losses as much as maximizing wins.
